VietNamNet Bridge – Most of the Vietnamese top 10 businesses are state owned corporations while the 10 Vietnamese biggest enterprises would also make it into the world’s top 1,000 businesses in terms of turnover.

VietNamNet newspaper and Vietnam Report on November 25 announced the rankings of 500 Vietnamese biggest enterprises in 2009

VietNamNet newspaper and Vietnam Report this morning announced the rankings of 500 Vietnamese biggest enterprises in 2009 (VNR 500).

Despite the big impact of the global economic recession, state owned enterprises still account for 46.4 percent of total enterprises in VNR 500. The leading 10 enterprises all have revenue of over one billion dollar, and make up more than 10 percent of the total state budget collection in 2008.

And all of the 10 enterprises can meet all requirements to be eligible for listing among the world’s top 1,000 biggest enterprises (Fortune 1000).

The Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) continues to top the list of 10 Vietnamese biggest enterprises.

According to Vietnam Report, the 2009 VNR 500 ranking witnessed big progress made by private businesses. Accounting for 30 percent in the list of top 500 enterprises, the private economic sector is starting to show its capability.

The 2009 ranking shows key economic fields still can impress such as finance and banking, gold trading, real estate, steel, seafood and telecommunication.

However, the 2009 VNR 500 ranking showed a considerable decrease in the number of real estate companies reflected the difficulties of the sector, commencing in the second half of 2008.

VNR 500 is the business ranking based on the Fortune 500 model with assistant from consultants including Professor John Quelch, Associate Dean of Harvard Business School.

This is the third consecutive year VietNamNet and Vietnam Report have joined forces to release the ranking. The 2009 VNR 500 ranking has been based on the data of more than 10,000 businesses nationwide updated until December 31, 2008
